In road transport, proper cargo arrangement is crucial to make the most of the vehicle’s loading space without exceeding the permitted gross weight, while ensuring load stability and safety. Optimal pallet placement prevents product damage and minimizes the risk of load shifting during transit. Depending on whether a road container or a standard semi-trailer is used, loading capacity may vary.

Road containers are commonly used for long-distance transport and intermodal operations, such as road-rail shipments. Their fixed dimensions make pallet positioning particularly important. The most common containers measure around 7.45 meters in length and typically hold 18 to 19 euro-pallets. There are also longer containers, similar in length to a trailer (13.6 meters), which can accommodate up to 33 pallets. “Mega” versions have an increased internal height, allowing the transport of taller goods while maintaining the same pallet capacity.

The most popular option in road transport, however, remains the standard Tautliner or curtain-sider trailer. It measures approximately 13.6 meters in length, with an internal height of around 2.7 meters, enabling the transport of up to 33 euro-pallets. The Mega trailer variant offers increased internal height — up to around 3 meters — making it ideal for transporting tall pallets or cargo requiring extra vertical space. This type of trailer also enables loading not only from the rear, but also from the side or top, significantly facilitating the handling of oversized or irregularly shaped loads.

While road containers are a practical solution for intermodal transport, standard trailers are most commonly used in everyday road freight, offering the greatest flexibility and optimal use of cargo space. In practice, this makes them the preferred choice for pallet transport on both domestic and international routes.
